This Associated Press photo from April ran in a May edition of the Toronto Star, both in print and online, without the proper context. The photo shows Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., and his aide displaying an image of a protester carrying a sign referencing George Soros earlier that morning outside the site of the House Judiciary Committee Field Hearing. Goldman was citing anti-semitism as a feature of political attacks that referenced Soros, who is a billionaire financier and philanthropist. “Without the appropriate context, the image can inevitably be viewed as antisemitic in itself,” says Toronto Star editor-in-chief Anne Marie Owens. “Someone who understands all those layers intuitively can do the work of filling in the subtleties of context, but they shouldn’t have to do that heavy lift on their own.”
