CFL Week 1 parlay picks: Bet on Bombers to win, Roughriders and Redblacks to cover spread

The 2023 CFL season starts this week and we’re scoping out a pick from all three weekend games for our parlay.

The pregame narrative: The Winnipeg Blue Bombers were denied a three-peat last year but are a good pick to start the 2023 season off with a victory. The Montreal Alouettes underwent plenty of changes this offseason, leaning us toward the Ottawa Redblacks. Thirdly, we’re backing the Saskatchewan Roughriders with some points against the Edmonton Elks.

CFL Week 1 parlay picks

Parlay: Blue Bombers moneyline + Redblacks +4.5 + Roughriders +4.5 (+315)

Blue Bombers moneyline (-215) : The preseason favourites to win the Grey Cup meet at IG Field on Friday night, and it’s fair to say the hype surrounding the Hamilton Tiger-Cats is getting out of hand.

The 110th Grey Cup is in Hamilton and many are already punching the Ti-Cats’ ticket to the final after the team signed Bo Levi Mitchell. That all seems premature considering the quarterback’s recent results.

Mitchell’s poor play in 2021 opened the door for Jake Maier to replace him on the Calgary Stampeders. The QB averaged 8.0 yards per completion with 10 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. It didn’t get much better in 2022 with nine touchdowns to six interceptions on just 7.7 yards per completion.

All of Hamilton’s offseason moves aren’t likely to materialize into early-season success. We’ll take Winnipeg, a team with relatively low turnover and no shortage of talent, to win in the season opener.

Other parlay picks

Redblacks +4.5 (-143) : Montreal looks like a completely different team ahead of this season, and that could lead to some struggles early on.

The Alouettes enter the year with a new quarterback as Trevor Harris leaves and Cody Fajardo enters the picture. Fajardo has a bigger arm than his predecessor, and while that does lead to more yards per completion, it also creates more interceptions.

Montreal also lost standout receivers Geno Lewis and Jake Wieneke. Both are major blows to a passing attack that can use some help.

Jeremiah Masoli is returning from a broken leg for the Redblacks and benefits from a bolstered offensive line. Ottawa signed Drew Desjarlais from the Blue Bombers and selected Dontae Bull with the first pick in the CFL draft.

Roughriders +4.5 (-152) : Lastly, we’re teasing up Saskatchewan.

The Roughriders are one of the teams we’re most excited about based on their offseason. Harris takes over for Fajardo in a move that represents an upgrade at the position.

Wieneke is also joining the squad via Montreal while star receiver Derel Walker is leaving the Elks to join the Riders.

The game is in Edmonton at Commonwealth Stadium, but that hasn’t been a positive in recent years for the home side. The Elks are 0-16 in home games over the last two seasons.
